They say every marriage has its secrets.
But no one sees what happens behind closed doors.
And sometimes those doors should never be opened …
Sal and Charlie are married. They love each other. But they aren’t happy. Sal cannot leave, no matter what Charlie does – no matter how much it hurts.
This Debut novel made my brain shake.
In a split second, everything changed for Sal. First the blood and then the blind panic of getting the story straight.
Charlie is a corporate lawyer and a violent, controlling bully.
Sal comes from a loving Italian family, and with their daughter Maggie is a stay at home parent just trying, each day to ‘do the right thing’, keep house and try not to upset Charlie. Sal suffers at Charlie’s hand and this is a read that is not at all comfortable to read.
Domestic violence is never easy to read or write about, but Lisa Hall really does cover a range of emotions within Sal and Charlies marriage. The depth of Charlies rage is hard to read.
The twist is unbelievable and I had to re-read just to see what I had missed. This is the twist of the year.
Lisa Hall has made a massive step, with this amazing book, to becoming a must read author. If all her books follow this brilliance, then we as readers have a lot to look forward to.
